Thank you to everyone who took part in our 2024 Seafarers’ Survey – almost 5,000 of you!
Your honest responses make interesting reading and will help us to inform our shipowners and crew managers.
Highlights included the confirmation that, particularly for some sought-after ranks, salaries are still rising, though more slowly than last year.
Salaries seem to be equal for most nationalities, although Indian senior officers on dry cargo vessels continue to receive the highest wages - some 10% higher than their Eastern European and Filipino peers. Senior ratings (Bosun, Fitter, Pumpmen and cooks) remain in demand.
Seafarers tell us that, along with salaries, the things that influence their choice of posting are a more convenient joining date or a fleet with younger vessels.
Connectivity is important to seafarers who want to keep in touch with family, friends and the outside world while at sea. It was interesting to see that 100% of seafarers who responded to our survey had access to the internet at sea, though about a quarter had to pay for this.
Sadly there has been a rise in the number of seafarers who reported they were short of food or water on their latest voyage or that statutory rest hours were not followed. Please raise with us any concerns you have so that we can ensure crew wellbeing is a priority among our owners.
Henrik Jensen, Danica CEO, said: “Our annual Seafarers’ Survey is an important snapshot of how our seafarers are feeling and being treated. We now have five years’ worth of data to compare, making Danica an important source of information for the crewing sector. Thank you to everyone who took part. Your feedback matters and we look forward to even more of you taking part next year.”
