For the past decade, Danica has supported Mercy Ships by helping recruit qualified maritime professionals when specialist crew members are needed on board its hospital ships.

Mercy Ships is an international humanitarian organisation that provides free surgeries and healthcare services to people who have limited access to safe medical care. For more than 30 years, it has worked alongside African nations, delivering life-changing medical treatment while also training local healthcare professionals and supporting the development of healthcare infrastructure.

Its two hospital ships, Africa Mercy and Global Mercy, depend on people from a wide range of professions to carry out their mission and each year, more than 2,500 volunteers from over 60 countries contribute their time, skills, and experience, including surgeons, dentists, nurses, cooks, engineers, and maritime professionals.

Behind every successful surgery is a dedicated crew ensuring the ships operate safely and efficiently. Marine engineers maintain critical machinery and equipment, while deck officers and other seafarers play an essential role in keeping the vessels running. Although their work may take place far from the operating theatre, it is vital to making Mercy Ships' medical mission possible.

Danica assists Mercy Ships in finding maritime professionals when specific expertise is required. However, the organisation also relies heavily on volunteers who are willing to contribute their own time and experience. For many seafarers, volunteering with Mercy Ships offers a unique opportunity to use their professional skills to support a truly worthwhile cause and make a lasting difference to people's lives.
