As the world becomes ever more connected, some seafaring skills remain timeless. Celestial navigation is one of them and the crew aboard the Danica-managed OKEE Aurelia recently revisited that tradition through onboard training. It was a refreshing counterpoint to the digital pressures of the season. For a few hours, navigation relied not on satellites or screens, but on the sun, the horizon, and the steady motion of the ship beneath their feet.
The team practised taking sights, plotting positions, and checking compass errors. It’s meticulous work that rewards patience and precision, and gives navigators a deeper, more instinctive understanding of their surroundings. The training aligned with STCW-1978 (as amended in 2010), including the competencies set out in Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3, covering coastal passage planning and the identification, correction, and management of magnetic compass errors.
With clear skies and calm conditions, the sessions also created a strong sense of connection to the generations of mariners who navigated the same way long before the digital age. At a time of year when many seafarers are thinking about home and preparing small celebrations onboard, returning to these fundamentals was a reminder of the craftsmanship and professionalism at the heart of the job.
As the year draws to a close, we’d like to extend our warmest Christmas wishes to everyone working at sea. Your resilience and commitment keep global trade moving, even when you’re far from the people who matter most. May your link to home stay strong, your voyages be safe, and your festive season as peaceful as the quietest night watch.
